Heavy rains and dangerous landslides have hit northern China hard, killing at least 30 people and forcing the evacuation of over 80,000 residents, mostly in and around Beijing.
The powerful storms, which began over the weekend, have triggered flash floods and landslides in Beijing, nearby Hebei and Tianjin, and in 10 other provinces across the country. Chinese weather officials have issued a high-level storm warning, and more rain is expected through Wednesday.
Officials say most of the deaths occurred in Beijing’s Miyun District, a suburban area northeast of the city center. Rescue teams have been working around the clock to save people trapped by rising water.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for emergency measures, urging local governments to prepare for the worst and quickly move people out of danger zones. The government has also announced over $75 million in disaster aid, with $27 million going directly to Beijing to support rescue and recovery.
These floods are the latest in a series of extreme weather events to hit China in recent years, raising concerns about climate resilience and emergency response.
